Cubs Win! Cubs Win!
Umm… so the Chicago Cubs have won the World Series… for the first time since 1908!
Remember the character “Brooks” in the 1994 film, The Shawshank Redeption?
Red (Morgan Freeman) is describing what happens to a guy who’s been in prison for his whole adult life.
“These walls are funny. First you hate ’em, then you get used to ’em. Enough time passes, you get so you depend on them. That’s institutionalized.”
5 generations of Cubs fans have lived the entirety of their lives under Institutionalized Loserdom. Almost, in some cases, exhibiting a bizarre form of pride about supporting the team with the longest championship drought in professional sports history.
Now, it’s the end of an era.
Cubs fans will need to learn to forge new identities – those of winners! It’s not going to be easy, but the residents of The City of Big Shoulders (and the diaspora of Chicago expats) have always been a tough bunch, and I’m sure they will manage to find a way.
